AVIF to SVG Converter

AVIF is the newest web image format, and many design tools still cannot open it. Your browser can, so SVGShift decodes it there and traces the pixels to SVG.

How to use the AVIF to SVG tool

  1. Drop an .avif file onto the artboard.

  2. Pick a preset; AVIF is usually lossy, so a little Pre-smoothing helps.

  3. Download the SVG.

About AVIF

AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec from the Alliance for Open Media. It compresses better than JPEG and WebP and supports transparency, which is why many sites now serve it. It is still a raster format, so to scale a logo saved as AVIF you have to trace it.

Questions

My browser will not open the AVIF.

AVIF decoding is supported in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (16.4+). On an older browser, convert the file to PNG first.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes, transparent areas stay empty in the SVG.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is decoded and traced by JavaScript in your own browser tab, in a background worker. Nothing is sent to a server, which is why it also works offline once the page has loaded.

Why does a photo turn into a huge SVG?

A vectorizer describes every colour region as a filled path. A photo has thousands of tiny regions, so the SVG can end up larger than the original file. Vectorizing works best on logos, icons, line art, signatures and flat illustrations with a handful of colours.
