  1. Drop a .bmp file onto the artboard.

  2. Use Black & white for scans and line drawings, or Colour for logos.

  3. Download the SVG.

Bitmap to vector

BMP stores raw, uncompressed pixels, so there are no compression artefacts to clean up. That usually means a sharp trace. Large scans can be several megabytes; the trace resolution slider downsizes them for tracing while keeping the SVG at the original dimensions.

Questions

Is “bitmap to vector” the same thing?

Yes. Bitmap is another word for raster image, and vector usually means SVG for web and design work.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is decoded and traced by JavaScript in your own browser tab, in a background worker. Nothing is sent to a server, which is why it also works offline once the page has loaded.

Why does a photo turn into a huge SVG?

A vectorizer describes every colour region as a filled path. A photo has thousands of tiny regions, so the SVG can end up larger than the original file. Vectorizing works best on logos, icons, line art, signatures and flat illustrations with a handful of colours.
